About

Since the invention of the printing press, books have been battling for spots on shelves all over the globe.  With limited shelf space, available competition can be fierce.  Recently, I remodeled my office and added a brand new bookcase.  Now I must fill it with brand new books.  Join me as I review the latest bestsellers of the day, with the occasional classic thrown in.

Which books will be deemed worthy of being on my shelf?  Tune in every week to find out.

Hi there. I like this blog and was wondering if you’d be interested in doing something collaborative between our blogs to share viewership. Perhaps I could do a guest post.
I particularly enjoy your stuff on writing, but I’m open to just about anything. Let me know if you’re interested. No pressure.

  3. Thanks for visiting and following Bookshelf written for book lovers like you. And welcome to the blogosphere. Great concept of having books battle it out for shelf space. Let the literary wars begin… Look forward to see what books are victorious and which die a noble death. Cheers, Alex.

    • Thanks, the books talk a big game about trashing each other on the battlefield, but at the end of the day, they sit by the campfire, make Smores and engage in a rousing chorus of “Kum Bai Yah.”

I think to reverse the weight of your reviews, i.e., reviewing the classics with an occasional best-seller thrown in the mix, would be a wonderful boon to literary knowledge for the current generation. Of course, it depends where you draw the line and how you actually define the term “classic.” For example, Vonnegut would fall into my borders and definition of classic.

I look forward to reading your reviews to stay abreast with what’s coming out these days.

Thank you also for visiting my online writing studio, and for electing to follow my work.

Oh, I should tell you I am of the “Kum Bai Yah” ilk.

  5. Thanks for the Follow. Normally I just follow other photographers, but this looks really interesting. So I am signing up. Looking forward to your posts.

  6. Your blog’s name immediately caught my eye! I will drop by each week to check on new books that I can add to my platoon too.
Thank you for stopping by my blog. 🙂

Hey, I’ve been enjoying your blog so much, I’ve nominated you for a Very Inspiring Blogger award: http://jedibyknight.com/2015/01/10/very-inspiring-blogger-award/

You’ve been making me think a lot about indie publishing lately, so who knows? Maybe I’ll head down that path. thanks for the inspiration 🙂

    • Thank you! I’m glad you like it! Now if you could just tell 10,000 of your friends, I’ll be able to get this party started!

I have to admit I haven’t been practicing what I’ve been preaching about self-publishing. Ten days into the new year and I haven’t written much. Oh well. New Year Resolutions don’t really start till March.

Someone nominated me for a Liebster Award, what is that? I’ll have to go back in my comments and thank the person. My cynical self assumed it was like some sort of scam where there’d be a claim that a Nairobi Prince was trying to transfer money to me.

      • Mei-Mei's avatar Mei-Mei says:

Haha, you are half right. All these awards are basically like chain letters. There are different rules for each, usually answering some questions in a blog post, and then passing on the nomination to others. Liebster is given to small/new blogs to give them some love and help them cultivate new readers.

Thanks for liking my blog. I like yours too. I hope you’ll contribute to some conversation. – Emma

    • Thanks – so I take it you’ve started a blog where you’re going to discuss your efforts to get published, get an agent, etc? That could be interesting, and maybe motivational. I find that if I say I’m going to do something on my blog, I at least try harder to do it. (Even if only 3 people are listening).

      • EmmaG's avatar EmmaG says:

I have. I hope it will be interesting and will let other writers see that they’re not working in a vaccum. Having an audience always makes me more likely to follow through too.

    Hi bookshelfbattle!

I just created an experimental little real-time self-modifying game in the comments of the post below. I think you might enjoy it and I’d love to have you join in if you’re interested. No worries if not.

Changing The Rules *Is* The Game

I guess this isn’t really the place for this sort of message, but I wasn’t sure where else to reach you. I found myself starting to look for a relevant post to put the comment on, then realized that is prehaps the worst form of communication yet conceived. Except maybe starfish.

    Cheers!

Thanks for liking and following my KenMaursCorner. I’m curious how you “found ” me, and why you would follow me……
I was interested to read of your commitment to post every day, when a couple of years back, I decided that I “didn’t have to blog every day”.
I love reading and belong to several book clubs as well as my personal choice of books. I look forward to seeing how you stock your new bookshelf.

    • I’m only a month late in responding but who’s counting? Feel free to look around. Sadly, we’re without the Walking Dead until next season. Did you like the finale?

      • Joy's avatar Joy says:

I did like the finale. I know a lot of people were expecting it to be more…dramatic? In a way that maybe elicited more emotion out of the viewer, but I liked that it was a bit more subtle. I’m still trying to figure out how Glen survived though 🙂

  35. Julia Thorne's avatar Steve O'Gorman says:

Too many books, too few shelves – now that’s what I call a relateable statement! I’ve always been conscious that I’ve read far too few of the so-called ‘classics’ (i.e. the Canon of World Literature), but it doesn’t worry me so much lately.
I did a Creative Writing module as part of my second first year at university – I was the only guy in a class of girls young enough to be my daughters. At one point, the lecturer and I were discussing ‘Wuthering Heights’ – and we soon became aware that we were the only two people in the room who’d read it. I’d always thought it was a ‘must-read’ for teenage girls until that point. Now I tend to refer to that genre of books as ‘B.T.’ and ‘A.T.’ – Before and After ‘Twilight.’ 😉
