Game of Thrones has introduced us to the possibility that despite our hatred of one side or the other, it is possible to come to a realization of how that side came to be.
Case in point. Jaime Lannister. He’s smarmy. Arrogant. But he did kill the original king. It earned him mockery in the form of the “Kingslayer” nickname, though no one cared enough to not participate in the subsequent takeover of the kingdom. He saved the day, but the people he saved it for hate him. Its tough not to be jaded.
So my hunch is things will become less clear than light vs. dark sides of the Force. Each side will have their own reasoning for fighting. Naturally, we get behind Han and Chewie et. al, but we’ll get why the bad guys do what they do, how they were driven to it.
And while I’d be very surprised if JJ Abrams breaks our hearts and turns Luke Skywalker into a villain, a climate in which audiences seek out motivations as to why villains do what they do does make a Skywalker villain more possible than ever.
I hope it doesn’t happen. I’d be very surprised.
Also, it is entirely possible this film will be just three hours of Jar Jar Binks reading a dictionary.
The marketer in me is chomping at the bit to see what kind of numbers the box office brings in because this movie meshes so many generations. I’m betting opening weekend will blow every other movie’s opening weekend right out of the water.
My oldest son (he’s 5, almost 6) has never seen any of the Star Wars films. So I’m stealing the original three from my parents because seeing a VHS tape is going to freak my son out (and let me go all old school on him), AND we are going to marathon the original three movies followed by the prequels before seeing The Force Awakens. The kid is about to find out how much of a geek his mother really is!
Cool that sounds like a lot of fun.
Star Wars is going to do so well because it’s the first film series I can think of that has three generations behind it – the Baby Boomers, the oft neglected Gen Xers, the Millenials, and maybe even a fourth depending on whatever the media starts calling your kids’ generation.
It’s definitely had a lot of time to build.
LOL Dear Anita … because of me too, that my near 11 years old son, that he got to learn what Star Wars is all about. And he think his Mommie is cool. He had a Lego Star Wars PS game too and too cute not to play with him. We’d watched all six episodes, but this new coming up 7th movie has to wait since the crazy fans are out there doing cinema Attack with all their Force!
😀
I think by now, it is obvious that this new Star Wars film will break a ton of box office records or at least that is my prediction. As for your theory about Luke Skywalker being a villain, I wonder If fans of the original series would be upset about that. Anyway, keep up the great work as always 🙂
If they do it, I think they’ll do it in a way where you’re like, “Huh, I get why Luke would go that way.”
I don’t think they did it though. The early reviews are in. I’ve avoided them, but I feel like if Luke is the bad guy, the social media/blogverse/TV/media would all be like “OH MY GOD LUKE SKYWALKER IS THE BAD GUY!!!”
So I’m pretty sure we’re safe.
I saw that one trailer where Matthew Mcconaughey was watching the 7th Star Wars’s teaser and he cried. And I said to myself …, “Ok … I got to watch this to understand why he cried.”
LOL
He probably stubbed his toe.
LOL hahaha …
Or he just realized how smelly his shoes are … 😛
