I’ve seen this movie a million times since childhood and happened to watch it again recently. It’s funny how the older your get, the more things you notice.
Thus, without further ado, and I have to do this quick before the Yeti finds out, it’s my Top Ten Observations About A Christmas Story (1983).
#10 – Life is Hard
Yeah, obvious, but still, I notice this more as an adult than I did as a kid. As a kid I just thought Ralphie’s father was an old grumpy bastard. Now I know why he’s old and grumpy. You work all day and then come home to a house where shit breaks every five minutes and you have to spend all your free time fixing it because if you can’t then you have to shell out some of that money you worked so hard for. As an only child millennial lawyer, that post gave me three black eyes.
Nah, kidding. I watched this movie again on Christmas. I had a more or less middle class suburban childhood so I can relate to it, even though mine happened in the 90s. And I definitely understand how the father feels every year that passes.
Only child = no siblings to help take care of your elderly parents, so urge the old folks to eat their Wheaties.
Lawyer = awesome if you make a lot of money otherwise you might end up working 90 hours a week to make 40,000.
Millennial = good. You get in on the ground floor of all this great tech.
Well, we can’t help the hand we’re dealt, I guess. Except for becoming a lawyer. That’s entirely on me.
True and the only child thing is only bad if your sibling would have been great. Statistically, your sibling that didn’t happen would likely have just stolen all your toys and drove you crazy growing up, followed by dumping on you in adulthood while not helping with the caretaking of the elderly rents so…single child probably ended up a plus. I still think technically, being a millennial would be great, I’m just not sure the millennials realize how good they got it. That’s ok, neither did Gen X or other previous generations. So 2 out of 3.
