E-Book Creation Software

Who knows of some good ebook creation software?  Because I just looked up Adobe InDesign, saw they want 50 bucks a month, and passed out.  Call me old fashioned, but fifty bucks a month just to rent software?  What am I missing?

Or do you format your own ebooks?  Maybe to hire an expert to do it for you is the way to go?

For a simple eBook, you don’t need anything but a word processor, at least for Amazon Kindle.

    • Don’t you need something to put in the links to the chapters and make it look all booky?

I don’t know about making it look all “booky” but I didn’t put the chapter links in my book because 1. I never use them myself and 2. I don’t see the need for them when Kindle automatically bookmarks whatever page you were on. There may be a way to do this in Word, I dunno, but it shouldn’t be super expensive to accomplish it.

  2. You can use different online ones that also publish your ebook for you like Lulu if that’s what you’re looking for

I format them myself. There’s no secret to it, and for e-readers, clarity is most important. If it were print you were paying for, I could see the point, but clean professionalism is the way to go with ebooks.

A good word processing program (like MS Word) is all you need. Software rental is for the birds, especially if you’re creating your first book. It doesn’t need to be fancy, just clean. You can incorporate links easily w/Word, too.
