The author of To Kill a Mockingbird has passed away at age 89. She gave us Atticus Finch, a sequel that came out last year, and she was Truman Capote’s homie.

What came out last year wasn’t a sequel, but an early first draft of “Mockingbird.” It was originally rejected, perhaps deservedly so. I haven’t read “To Set a Watchman,” but some critics think its publication was a mistake that only served to muddy Lee’s legacy. She really wasn’t in any shape to approve its release, if she was even aware of it.
They probably could have made everyone happy by releasing it with a note that this is Lee’s original draft if you’d like to check it out for historical purposes but know she didn’t intend this to be the story.
