Do You Write Sitting or Lying Down?

I tend to be a lier downer.  I plop into bed, get comfy, put the laptop on my stomach (I know you’re getting excited thinking about this 3.5 readers but stop, lets keep this professional) and then start writing.

I wonder if I’d get more done sitting up at a desk but then I also think if I’m comfortable I write more.  But lying down too much is bad for your health though.

Sometimes I split the difference and sit in a comfortable easy chair.

How do you write, 3.5 readers?

Eyes encrusted with sleep, the sun yet to rise, a coffee warming my palms and lyricless music prodding my imagination with audio inspiration sticks.

Today, I’m allowing lyrics, because Bowie.

I have a convertible workstation for either sitting or standing. Have NEVER stood because my butt’s just too happy in my La-Z-Boy easy chair.

  3. I have a standing desk which, admittedly took some getting used to. But at least now if I spend the whole day writing and editing I don’t feel like such a load. Music on, not too loud. Coffee in the morning, tea in the afternoon and water all day long.

    • Sounds like a very healthy plan.

So Doc, if someone were to lie in bed for like hours a day, drink lots of Coke, forget water…that’s a pretty healthy strategy right?

I’m just asking for a friend. It’s all carrots and cucumber water and 10K marathons for me.

As much as I’d love to, I can’t write lying down because my hand cramps.

It depends. I have a desk, and I do spend a lot of time hiding from the kids at it. But whenever there isn’t a minion running about the house raining down chaos, I’m all about the couch. Case in point: https://twitter.com/AnitaLovett/status/578620723364814848

Always sitting, although the location varies. I have a big desk and comfy chair in my office, but I also sometimes sit on the sofa or wingback chair in our living room if my husband’s home. No matter where I’m sitting, my dog likes to be touching me — either he jumps up in my lap or lays on my feet while I’m at my desk, or he curls up right beside me if I’m in the living room.

I write sitting down but sometimes I lay down when I’m comfy.

Preferably, sitting cross legged at my desk, but sometimes I need to change positions, then I like a comfy armchair with a lap desk or pillow to support my laptop.

    • I tried a lap desk once. It was met with much protest, haranguing, claims of me being a prissy fancy lad. It was eventually thrown away. I am surrounded by troglodytes. I bet no one would throw your lap desk away.

In the dawn of time, in bed with a college ruled notebook. Then at a desk with an electric typewriter. Now in front of the computer into my maverick Atlantis word program. The fingers can fly on the keyboard so much more quickly than hands can write! But I kind of long for a keyboard that will work on my knees in bed.

    • I wonder if people wrote better with typewriters and paper because if you screwed up, you’d have to write it all over again to get a perfect page.

We certainly wrote shorter. Remember when Stephen King got a word processor? You could almost tell the exact moment in time. (The cocaine had an effect too, of course.)

  10. At the kitchen table sitting down, or at work with a standing desk

    Hey 3.5 Readers,

Earlier this week, I asked the writing masses how do they write? Sitting? Standing? Lying down? Curled up in the fetal position?

Many scribes lined up to share. Let’s keep the discussion going, nerds.
