You get a month off. No one will bother you. Everyone you care about has expressed support…nay, demanded that you do nothing but write and all will be fine without you until you return. You have a cabin in the woods, or a beach house, or a hotel in Hawaii…ok wherever you want. And all you have to do for the next month is write.
In fact, let’s up the ante. You are locked in the room. You have all the food, sustenance, drinks, water, bathroom, really all the things you need in life. And there’s no distractions. You get like one hour a day for a TV watching break. After that, the TV magically stops until the next day’s one hour break.
Also, you only get to use the Internet in so far as you are conducting novel research. Once you start looking up youtube videos about cats engaging in hilarious activities, the Internet shuts down until you conduct serious research again.
You’re free of all distractions. You have all that you need.
QUESTION – Given this situation, what would you write?
Throw in the hypothetical that I had the talent to write – I would write a novel about losing a husband to cancer and losing a brother to suicide – depressing I know – but there it is.
What about you?
Sorry for your losses. As Dori the Fish would say, “Just keep swimming…just keep swimming…”
Bahahahaha yes she would!
I would finish my novel although which one out of the three that are half started…I don’t know.
I do have that problem. You start one novel, you hit a wall, you convince yourself a new novel would be more productive, then you hit a wall with that one. Sometimes you just have to press through.
Yes good advice – I just need to press through
I would write like crazy to finish several uncompleted stories, and start writing a novel whose idea has been bugging me since last August. But it would be a bummer not to celebrate at the end of each day with a few ridiculous cat videos 🙂
No cat videos! You’ll say you’ll just watch one and then before you know it, twelve hours of cat video watching have passed and you’ve written nothing!
True, true 🙂
Could I have books with me? Because then I’d write a crap ton of book reviews and have my blog scheduled ahead into the next millennium. 😉
Without books, I’d probably make an attempt at the 2-3 story ideas I’ve had kicking around in my head for a while, and/or the 1-2 essay-ish ideas. I’m not really a creative writer; I’m much better at writing things that I know to be true rather than speculating with fiction. But maybe a month of isolation would change that.
I suppose you could have books. I’ve decided that procrastination will happen no matter what. In a room with nothing but a computer, I’d probably start counting the ceiling tiles.
I would write my origin story, about how I’m a genetically modified Turtlian who’s here on earth to spy on humans and decide if they’re worthy of interstellar contact and trade yet.
