Ernest Hemingway – Quote About Writing

“There is nothing to writing.  All you do is sit down at a typewriter and bleed.”

– Ernest Hemingway

Does it ever feel that way sometimes?

Even though I have never really finished and polished anything that wasn’t genre crap — Ernest was right. Which grinds me to say, because I think he was sort of an asshole. But I wasn’t really able to finish a writing project until I hit a point in my life where I didn’t care if I lived or died. Bleed much? Maybe that says something about me, maybe it says something about writing.

    • I think for me the difficulty lies in the speculative nature of the whole enterprise. No, money isn’t everything, but unfortunately it is something and we need at least a certain amount for daily survival. So much work goes into a project that may never see the light of day. It is hard to stay motivated. You really need to believe in yourself and be accepting of possible failure to really keep going.
