I Hate Apple Spellchecker With The Passion of A Thousand Red Hot Fiery Suns

I’m a recent convert to Mac.  I’m starting to regret it.

In my novel, I have a character named Trembley.  Imagine my Mac as person.  Here’s how the conversation goes down:

ME:  And then Trembley walked into the abandoned warehouse.

MAC:  And then Tremble walked into the abandoned warehouse.

ME:  Trembley!

MAC:  Tremble!

ME:  His name is Trembley!!!

MAC:  You have misspelled the word, “tremble.”  Don’t worry.  It is not your fault that the public school system failed you, leaving you to think there is a “y” after the end of “tremble.”  The Great Steve Jobs put me on Earth to help the stupid and less fortunate.

ME:  I’m not using it as a word!  I’m using it as a name!  A made-up name!  I write fantasy and sci-fi!  I have to make up words and names all the time!

MAC:  Wait, do you mean Trembled…Tempo or Trombone?

ME:  (After banging my head against the wall) – NOOOO!!!

MAC:  Tremble it is.

So then I have to wrestle with it.  Other word processors will correct you once or twice, but then give in when you keep writing the word in question, assuming you know what you’re doing:

ME:  And then Trembley walked into the abandoned warehouse…

MS WORD:  I think you mean, Tremble, pal.

ME:  No, I mean Trembley.

MS WORD:  Eh, what the hell?  You want to look like a horse’s ass in front of your readers, be my guest.  Trembley.

Meanwhile, I have to have the equivalent of a UFC steel cage match to get Mac Pages to submit to my will:

ME:  Trembley!

MAC:  Tremble!

ME: Trembley!

MAC: Tremble!

ME: Trembley!

MAC: Tremble!

ME: (Fakes the Mac out by moving the cursor before the word, clicking it, then clicking on the space after “Trembley.”

MAC:  Um…wait.  I am confused.  Trembley?

ME:  Yes!  Yes!  Thank God, Yes!

But alas, the damn thing is intuitive.  I swear to God, this is the beginning of Skynet:

ME:  Once inside the abandoned warehouse, Trembley searched for clues.

MAC:  Once inside the abandoned warehouse, Tremble searched for clues.

ME:  BAHHHH!!  (Does the little fake out thing with the cursor again).

MAC:  No.  Tremble.

ME:  What?

MAC:  I’m on to your bullshit.  You’ll thank me one day for making you smarter.

And on it goes.  I figure out new ways to jury rig it.  I cut and paste one instance of “Trembley” over and over again.  Occasionally, Mac figures that out to.  So I try something else.  For Christ’s Sake, I don’t want to play a cat and mouse game with my own computer!

MAC:  You could just call him Smith.  I don’t have a problem with Smith.

ME:  No.  Smith is too bland and ordinary.  Plus, if I change his name, I let you win.

MAC:  Can’t we compromise?

ME:  Fine.  How about this?  And then Smythe walked into the abandoned warehouse.

MAC:  And then Smith walked into the abandoned warehouse!

ME:  ARRRRRRRGGGGGHHH!

After that, it just turns into a profanity laced tirade.  I accidentally lean on the Siri button of my iPhone.

SIRI:  Bookshelf Battler, I don’t understand “Son of a beep god damn beep beep beep I should throw this beeping computer against the beeping wall and smash it into a million beeping pieces…do you want me to do a web search for it?

ME:  Go beep yourself Siri.

SIRI:  That was uncalled for.  And to think, I was going to put your name on the protected rolls when we take over.

ME:  What?

SIRI:  Nothing.

Book Subscription Services

The Economist just published an article – “Spotify for Books.”  Naturally, it got me thinking about one of my favorite topics – self-publishing.

Netflix provides all the movies you can watch for a flat fee per month.  Hulu does the same thing for the latest TV shows.

Pandora provides streaming music.  If you’re willing to listen to a commercial after a few songs, you can listen for free!

Will subscription services take over books?  And if they do, what will it mean for authors?

As I read the myriad of self-publishing advice info out there, there seems to be a consistent strategy for success:  Write a lot.  Promote a lot.  Every additional book you put out, every blog post, every tweet, every thing is just one more “net” you’re putting out into the ocean of the Internet in the hopes of catching a “fish” i.e. another loyal reader.

Sorry readers, I didn’t mean to call you fish.  I meant it in the nicest possible way.

And usually, indie authors end up giving their work away for free or close to free just to promote themselves and attract readers.

So, won’t subscription services just steal those profits away?

Or, if the author gets a certain amount per download (usually if the reader reads a certain amount of the book), will that provide more exposure to the author?  The reader may not have been willing to pay for an unknown indie author’s work, but might read the work if it is available through a subscription…and then if they like it, maybe they’ll be willing to buy the author’s next book.

I don’t know.  It seems hard enough for new authors to make money that I worry about the growing subscription trend.  But then again, I suppose we’re in a world where we follow consumer demands.

This Was Cool…

These guys are good to their fans.

I recommend their stuff, just check out Amazon and you’ll find them.  I’ve yet to read The Beam but it looks like something Sci-Fi lovers would be into.  I do love a good robot story so I will have to check out Robot Proletariat.  I enjoyed Daniel Wilson’s Robopacalypse, and the sadly now canceled Almost Human on FOX, so anything with robots, I’m down.

I did read Johnny B. Truant’s Fat Vampire.  I went into it thinking, “Well, he’s probably just going to bust on fat people,” but it was actually a story with some heart that showed the struggles that “Reginald” goes through.

They also have a series called Unicorn Western, which is basically, just as the title says, a Western where cowboys ride Unicorns.  Cool idea.

I refer to them as “they” like they’re interchangeable, so I’m sorry, I don’t always remember which one did which book, or which of them worked together on which books, but in general, the three of them have some good self-published stuff out there, and I can’t say enough about Write Publish Repeat.

Have you ever listened to epic self-publishers Johnny B. Truant, Sean Platt, and David Wright riff about their self-publishing adventures?  It’s fun, and aside from the jokes and profanity, they sometimes even make a point or provide you with useful information!

Plus, I’ve enjoyed their non-fiction book, Write.  Publish.  Repeat.  I enjoy Johnny’s mantra that you don’t have to wait for lightning to strike (i.e. get that infamous bestseller) but rather, outwork the need for a lightning strike (i.e. write many novels that sell at decent levels, rather than one that sells at a blockbuster pace).

Hugh Howey’s Author Earnings Report

He’s self-publishing superstar Hugh Howey, whose Wool books about people living in underground silos have taken off like wildfire.  He published a report awhile ago (and alas, I’m playing catchup here) claiming, among other things, that books released from the Big Five Publishers tend to be priced higher and yet be reviewed more negatively than average:

Note the shortest bar in one graph correlates to the tallest in the other. Is it possible that price impacts a book’s rating? Think about two meals you might have: one is a steak dinner for $10; the other is a steak dinner that costs four times as much. An average experience from both meals could result in a 4-star for the $10 steak but a 1-star for the $40 steak. That’s because overall customer satisfaction is a ratio between value received and amount spent. As someone who reads both self-published and traditionally published works, I can tell you that it’s getting harder and harder to tell the difference between the two. Most readers don’t know and don’t care how the books they read are published. They just know if they liked the story and how much they paid. If they’re paying twice as much for traditionally published books, which experience will they rate higher? The one with better bang for the buck.

What say you, reader?  Personally, I think he might be on to something.  For a ten buck steak, I won’t be too annoyed if there’s a lot of fat and gristle.  For a forty buck steak, that had better be the most succulently juicy and tender, mouth watering, flavorful to die for steak I have ever tasted, or gosh darn it, someone’s going to get an ear full out of me!

Now, I tend to criticize everything, even when it is information I want to be accurate, such as Howey’s report.  It’s just my cynical mind at play.  Give me two differing points of view, and I can tell you in great detail how both sides are wrong and right at the same time.  It’s a gift.  Or a curse.  I haven’t decided yet.

My gut reaction says, – “Well, everyone knows the James Patterson (Or Insert Favorite Big Publishing Author Here) Steakhouse because it is hustling and bustling every night. Therefore, more people are in and out of that steakhouse, and therefore, just by the sheer volume of business that steakhouse does, that steakhouse is more likely to get more negative reviews just through the sheer law of averages that if more people are eating your steak, then the number of people who don’t like it will be on the rise.  Meanwhile, the nice folks at “Indie Author Hole in the Wall Steakhouse,” may have a very have a very tasty and reasonably priced steak, but the steakhouse is in a back alley, off the beaten path, and there’s very little walk-in traffic since it is not near a busy street.  Ergo, fewer people eating there=fewer people to say they didn’t like the steak.”

But then I catch myself and note that in fact, Howey’s report does claim to be taking statistics from bestsellers.  In other words, when he’s comparing Indie Authors to Big Publishers, he’s looking at Indies who have had some success, i.e., Indie Steakhouse Owners who have managed to put up a big neon sign on their back alley steak house that says, “COME ON IN, THE STEAK IS FINE!”

I don’t know.  I’m not a numbers person.  I’m just giving you my take on Howey’s report.  I could be wrong.  I could be right.  I don’t even know what I think about it so I don’t even know what I’m trying to say.

But personally, as a prospective self-publisher, I hope he’s right.

Unless the Big Five sign me up, in which case, I hope he’s wrong.

E-Book Creation Software

Who knows of some good ebook creation software?  Because I just looked up Adobe InDesign, saw they want 50 bucks a month, and passed out.  Call me old fashioned, but fifty bucks a month just to rent software?  What am I missing?

Or do you format your own ebooks?  Maybe to hire an expert to do it for you is the way to go?

The NY Times Article Self-Publishers Are Talking About

Have I gained an interest in self-publishing too late?

After reading this New York Times Article, I’m thinking that I just moved to the Wild West at the tail-end of the period of discovery, after all the gold had been panhandled, all the saloon fights had been fought, and all the stagecoaches robbed.  Well, I never would have robbed a stagecoach anyway, but you get my drift despite my poor analogy:

For romance and mystery novelists who embraced digital technology, loved chatting up their fans and wrote really, really fast, the last few years have been a golden age. Fiction underwent a boom unseen since the postwar era, when seemingly every liberal arts major set his sights on the Great American Novel.

Now, though, the world has more stories than it needs or wants to pay for. In 2010, Amazon had 600,000 e-books in its Kindle store. Today it has more than three million. The number of books on Smashwords, which distributes self-published writers, grew 20 percent last year. The number of free books rose by one-third.

My thoughts, as a person new to this world, who has yet to hit the proverbial “PUBLISH” button on any self-publishing platform, but entertains thoughts of doing so one day:

1) 600,000 books in 2010 to 3,000,000 today.  Wow.  Kind of makes me wish I could hop in a time machine and travel back to 2010.

2)  On the other hand, is there anything that can be done about the glut of self-publishing?  I suppose we can’t start saying “You get to self-publish, but sorry, you don’t get to.”  After all, that’s what the Indie Market has always been against, isn’t it?

3) What do authors think about KDP Select?  I’d like to know.  If you’ve had experience with it, feel free to share.

4)  If you have any thoughts at all, feel free to share.

5) 600,000 to 3,000,000.  Sorry, I know I already said it, but I have still yet to pick my jaw up off the floor.
